Why Your Life Expectancy Goes Up as You Get Older (The Survivorship Effect)

Here's a fact that sounds like a paradox. US life expectancy is 78.4 years. And yet a 78-year-old American does not have a life expectancy of zero — she has more than a decade left. A 65-year-old man isn't looking at 11 more years but at 18. Reach 85 and the tables now point past 91.
Your life expectancy is not a fixed number you're issued at birth and then count down from. It rises, quietly and predictably, every year you stay alive.
When people first notice this (often in our own product, where the projected finish line on your timeline moves further out as you age), the reaction is usually suspicion. It feels like a rounding trick, or worse, like flattery. It's neither. It's one of the oldest, best-documented features of actuarial math, and understanding it will change how you read every life-expectancy statistic you ever see, including ours.
The short answer
"Life expectancy" usually means life expectancy at birth: the average lifespan across everyone born now, including those who will die young. Once you've survived to 40, or 65, or 85, the people who died before that age can no longer drag down your average. Statisticians recalculate using only people who made it as far as you have. That's called conditional life expectancy, and it's higher at every age. You aren't gaining years by aging. You're revealing that you were never in the group the grim part of the average was counting.
Two different questions hiding in one number
The confusion comes from using one phrase for two different questions.
Question one: how long will a newborn live, on average? That's life expectancy at birth, the headline number. In 2023 the CDC put it at 78.4 years for the US: 75.8 for men, 81.1 for women. It averages over everything that can happen across an entire life, from infancy onward.
Question two: how long will you live, given that you're already 52? That's a different calculation with a different answer, because a crucial set of outcomes is already settled. You didn't die in childhood. You didn't die in the accident-prone decades of early adulthood. Every cause of death that strikes before 52 has already missed you, and the math is allowed to say so.
The CDC publishes both numbers in the same document. The 2023 United States Life Tables list remaining life expectancy at every single age. The headline just quotes the age-zero row.
The cleanest proof: the year 1900
If the survivorship effect still feels slippery, history makes it vivid.
In 1900, US life expectancy at birth was 47.3 years. Read that the modern way and you'd picture a country where people died in their forties, but that's not what those years looked like. The number was crushed by child mortality: roughly 1 in 10 American babies died before their first birthday, and in the worst urban tenement districts it was closer to 1 in 3.
Because so many lives ended at age zero, the average collapsed, even though the adults walking around were not, in fact, dropping dead at 47. The proof is in the same life tables: an American who reached 65 in 1900 could expect about 12 more years, living on toward 77. Thirty years past the "average lifespan," and completely ordinary.
Life expectancy at birth is honest about the population. It has never been a prediction for the individuals who survive.
What the current tables actually say
Here is the survivorship effect in today's numbers: the CDC's 2023 life tables, the same table our calculator uses. Each row answers: "Given that I've reached this age, what age can I expect to reach?"

Notice two things. First, the number only moves in one direction: every birthday you clear shifts your expected finish line outward. Second, the jumps get bigger, relatively, at older ages: an 85-year-old man's expectancy sits more than 15 years above his at-birth number. That's because the further you've traveled, the more of the mortality that dragged the average down is behind you.
You're not gaining years. You're revealing them.
This is the part we're careful about, because it's easy to gamify and we refuse to.
When your projection rises on your next birthday, nothing about your future changed. What changed is the information. At 40, the statistics still had to hedge against everything that kills people between 40 and 75. At 75, they don't: you've personally disproven all of it. The years were always plausible for the person you turned out to be; surviving is how you find out.
So the right way to hear "my life expectancy went up" is not "I earned bonus years" but "the estimate got less pessimistic about me, because I kept ruling out bad outcomes." It's the difference between a prize and a fog lifting. We surface it on your timeline honestly, as survivorship, not a reward, because it's a real feature of the math rather than a number anyone inflated.
Why most calculators get this wrong
Here's the practical reason this post exists: a surprising number of life-expectancy tools skip conditional life expectancy entirely. They take life expectancy at birth, adjust it for your habits, and hand it to you, no matter how old you are.
For a 30-year-old the error is small. For a 70-year-old it's brutal. Subtracting from the at-birth average implicitly counts deaths that already didn't happen to you, so the older you are, the more the estimate underestimates you. A healthy 78-year-old can be told she's living on borrowed time when the actual tables give her a decade.

Where your habits come back in
One last turn of the idea, because survivorship and habits interact in a way worth understanding.
Conditional life expectancy is still an average of the survivors: smokers and runners, well-slept and chronically stressed, all pooled together. Reaching 65 tells the math which group you're not in (the ones who didn't reach 65). It says nothing about where you sit within the group that did.
That's the part you control, and it's not small. Across the nine habit areas we track, the research-backed spread between the poorest and best habit profiles runs to more than a decade of life. The table above sets your baseline; your habits decide which side of it you land on. Survivorship is the part of the math that happens to you. The rest, to a meaningful degree, is the part you write, and it shows up in your biological age, how old your body is, versus the birthdays you've counted.
The bottom line
Life expectancy at birth is a population average, permanently weighed down by lives that ended early. It was never a forecast for you personally, and every year you survive, the honest forecast gets better. A 65-year-old American man should be planning around 83, not 76; a woman around 86. If a tool, an article, or a vague sense of dread has you measuring your future against the at-birth number, you're almost certainly underestimating the years ahead of you, and years you don't believe in are years you won't prepare for.

What is the life expectancy of a 65-year-old today?
Per the CDC's 2023 United States Life Tables, a 65-year-old man can expect 18.2 more years (to about 83) and a 65-year-old woman 20.7 more years (to about 86). The population-wide figure at 65 is 19.5 additional years. Those are averages across all 65-year-olds: favorable habits shift the realistic range meaningfully higher, and poor ones lower.
Am I actually gaining years by getting older?
No, and this is the honest framing that matters: you're revealing years, not gaining them. Nothing about your biology improves when the estimate rises on your birthday. The statistics stop hedging against causes of death you've now outlived, so the estimate converges toward the truth about the group you were always in. It's information catching up with reality, not a reward for aging.
Why does my calculator estimate exceed the CDC average?
Usually two legitimate reasons stack up. First, if you're past your twenties, conditional life expectancy already places you above the at-birth average, and a good calculator applies that adjustment. Second, if your habits are better than the population average (an average that includes smokers, heavy drinkers, and the sedentary), an evidence-based habit adjustment adds further years. Does the increase ever stop?
The expected age at death keeps rising as long as you live, but the remaining years shrink: a 65-year-old man expects about 18 more, a 90-year-old about 4 more. The survivorship effect raises where the finish line sits, not how fast you're approaching it. One more nuance: these are period tables, which assume today's death rates stay frozen. If medicine keeps improving, actual futures run slightly longer than the tables say: the estimates are conservative in your favor.
