In January 2026, a study made headlines with a claim almost too good to check: five more minutes of sleep, about two more minutes of brisk movement, and half a serving of vegetables a day were associated with roughly one additional year of life. The full package, done well across all three habits, was associated with more than nine.

The study is real, it is large, and it is genuinely important. It is also one of the most misreported studies of the year, because the fine print changes who those numbers apply to. This post is the version we wanted to read: what the researchers actually did, what the numbers actually compare, and what an honest person should take from it.

What the study actually did

Researchers at the University of Sydney followed 59,078 UK Biobank participants (median age 64) for a median of 8.1 years, during which 2,458 died. Three things make the design unusually strong for this kind of question:

  1. Sleep and activity were measured, not self-reported. Participants wore a wrist accelerometer for seven days, and sleep hours and moderate-to-vigorous activity minutes were computed by a validated algorithm. Most lifestyle research relies on questionnaires; measured behavior removes a whole layer of wishful memory.
  2. The three habits were studied together, not in isolation. The team split sleep, activity, and diet quality (a 10-item score covering vegetables, fruits, grains, fish, meats, dairy, oils, and sugary drinks) each into thirds, then estimated lifespan across all 27 combinations. Almost every famous study covers one habit at a time; joint studies like this are rare and valuable.
  3. It estimated healthspan, not just lifespan. Alongside years of life, the study modeled years lived free of cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, COPD, and dementia. Those healthy years are the part that actually matters most.

The headline numbers, and their fine print

The big number: +9.35 years of lifespan (95% CI: 6.7 to 11.6) for people in the most favorable third of all three habits at once (7.2 to 8 hours of sleep, more than 42 minutes of daily activity, top-third diet quality), compared with people in the least favorable third of all three. Healthspan showed nearly the same gain: +9.45 healthy years.

The viral number: +1 year from tiny changes. Five more minutes of sleep, 1.9 more minutes of activity, and a 5-point diet upgrade (roughly half a serving of vegetables, or 1.5 servings of whole grains) was associated with one additional year of life (95% CI: 0.69 to 1.15).

Here is the fine print the headlines skipped: that one-year figure was measured from the 5th percentile, meaning people whose combined sleep, activity, and diet were worse than about 95% of the cohort. In the paper's own reference profile, that meant about 5.5 hours of sleep, roughly 7 minutes of daily activity, and bottom-tier diet quality. For someone starting there, the study says the first tiny steps are worth a disproportionate amount. If your habits are already average, the same five minutes buys you much less. The steepest part of the curve sits at the bottom, which is exactly what the exercise dose-response research has shown for years: the jump from nothing to something is the biggest jump there is.

We think the study is more useful with that caveat than without it. "Anyone can add a year with five minutes of sleep" is a headline. "The further behind you are, the more the first small step pays" is a finding you can act on.

Why "together" is the point

You might wonder how nine years squares with our ranking of what each habit is worth, where no single habit except smoking approaches double digits. The answer is the most important idea in this post: the +9.35 figure is not the sleep number plus the exercise number plus the diet number. The researchers modeled the three habits jointly, letting their overlapping biology share credit, which is the only honest way to combine habits. Years from separate studies do not simply add, because the habits work through some of the same pathways.

The result also triangulates well with the other landmark combined-habits study. Li et al. (Circulation, 2018) estimated a 12-to-14-year spread between fully optimized and high-risk lifestyle profiles across five factors. This new study finds about 9.4 years across three factors. Two different cohorts, two different methods, same order of magnitude. That consistency is what makes a finding trustworthy, and it is the same combined-ceiling logic our calculator is built on: every habit scored inside one model, no double-counting.

The honest caveats

We hold headlines to a five-check standard, so here is where this study is weaker than the coverage suggested:

None of this sinks the study. It just moves it from "a magic year for five minutes of sleep" to what it actually is: strong evidence that small, concurrent improvements across sleep, movement, and diet are associated with meaningful gains, especially for people starting furthest back.

That is why the combined figure (about 9.4 years) is smaller than the sum of the habits' individual reputations, and it is consistent with the other landmark combined study (Li 2018, roughly 12 to 14 years across five factors). Those line up closely with the single-habit literature: the 7-to-8-hour sleep range and the value of daily movement match what the individual studies have shown for years.

Does this study prove that changing habits causes longer life?

No single observational study can prove cause. Participants chose their own habits, and the year-counts are life-table projections rather than observed lifespans. What earns the finding real weight is measured (not self-reported) behavior, a large cohort, and agreement with independent evidence for each habit separately. Treat the specific numbers as estimates and the direction as well-supported.
